TUM Language Center: Language courses, communication, and writing
The Language Center at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) offers a wide range of language courses and training for students, doctoral candidates, and TUM employees—German courses, English courses, and courses in other languages. Placement tests are available online for several languages.
Courses and services in German as a foreign language
The TUM Language Center offers various courses in German as a foreign language, starting at level A1. There are also subject- and career-oriented courses and workshops (e.g., on communication in the corporate world) available.
German language consultation is available online or in person (Munich). Writing and speaking consultatio is offered, e.g., to help students prepare for oral exams.
Aktuelle spezielle Deutschkurs-Angebote / Current special German course offers:
- German for Researchers – next registration period from February 23 until March 22, 2026
- German courses as intensive courses – registration starts on February 12, 2026.
During the summer semester, TUM will once again offer courses in German as a foreign language at the Weihenstephan campus (Weihenstephaner Berg 13). Courses at levels A1 to B1 will begin from 13 April, registration starts on March 16, 2026.
Courses in English
As a language of science, English is supported at the TUM Language Center through courses from B2 to C2 levels. To assist with publications or theses, various courses are available, including the "Thesis Writers Workshop" for the final stage of studies.
One-to-one writing consultations are provided by the English Writing Center – online or in person in Munich, Garching, and Weihenstephan ((Weihenstephaner Berg 13).
The TUM Topics courses are specifically aimed at TUM staff.
Upcoming: A course entitled “English in Science and Technology” (C1 level) will start in the summer semester, always on Monday afternoons in Weihenstephan. Registration begins on March 16, 2026.
Courses in other languages
All other languages offered can be found on the overview page Learn Languages at TUM. These include French, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and several other languages. These courses usually start at level A1.
Upcoming: Beginner courses in Italian and Spanish will start at the Weihenstephan campus in the summer semester. Registration begins on March 16, 2026.
Learning languages together
TUMtandem – Tandem learning: The Language Center matches people for tandem partnerships in German and another language (currently seven languages). The tandems learn and practice online or in person.
If you want to take it easy, you can visit the TUMi Language Café, which usually takes place weekly – in Munich, in Garching or at StudiTUM on the Campus Weihenstephan. (The language café is not offered by the TUM Language Center, it's organized by TUMi itself.)

The TUM Language Center offers additional services, including intercultural training and various events such as movie nights.
