Project Exhibition “Rethinking Bark”
What if we viewed bark not as waste, but as a material?
A student project at the TUM School of Life Sciences is exploring this question. The focus is on pine bark, a byproduct of forestry, whose potential the students are exploring anew through experimental design and artisanal craftsmanship. The result is a series of objects that utilize and highlight the material’s unique properties in various ways. As so-called “boundary objects,” they foster a dialogue between disciplines (forestry, design, craftsmanship, and materials research).
What makes this project special is its holistic approach: The students handled every step of the project themselves, from harvesting and processing the raw material to developing joining techniques, manufacturing the exhibits, and designing the exhibition for INTERFORST 2026.
The exhibition serves as an invitation to rediscover the potential of local forest resources and to reflect on future material cycles.
Discover the exhibits at our booth.
Under the guiding theme “Shaping forests together. Harnessing diversity. Securing the future.”, the leading trade fair for forestry and forestry technology provides a comprehensive overview of current developments, innovations, and future topics in the industry.
🌲 Project presentation at the booth:
Students from the Bachelor's degree program in Forest Science and Resource Management will present their project, “Development and Construction of a ‘Boundary Object’ from Pine Bark,” at the booth. Visitors can learn more about the functional material properties of bark.
