She investigates how quantitative methods and digital technologies can support more efficient and sustainable food supply chains. Her research focuses on making processes more efficient and reducing food waste.
What fascinates Marjolein Buisman most about her field?
“What fascinates me most about my field is its real-world relevance. Working on food supply chains means dealing with environmental, social, and economic challenges that truly matter. I enjoy using operations research and analytical methods to solve complex puzzles – especially when those solutions can make food systems more sustainable and efficient.”
What does Marjolein Buisman particularly look forward to about her work at the TUM in Freising?
“What I’m most looking forward to is the opportunity to work at the intersection of management and life sciences. Having a joint appointment across the School of Management and the School of Life Sciences offers a unique platform for interdisciplinary collaboration. I’m excited to combine my background in food technology with my expertise in supply chain management and operations research — and to connect this with the outstanding research already happening on campus in food and life sciences”, says Prof. Buisman.
“On a more personal note, I’m also looking forward to interacting with engaged students from diverse backgrounds — and, admittedly, enjoying the beautiful view from my office while doing so.”
About Marjolein Buisman: She studied Food Technology and Management, Economics and Consumer Studies at Wageningen University (Netherlands). There she also completed her doctoral studies in Operations Research in 2019, focusing on reducing food waste at retailers. In 2020, she became Professor of Retail Analytics at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. In September 2025, she was appointed as a professor to the TUM School of Life Sciences in Weihenstephan and the TUM School of Management.
