Administration
We operate central network services for the networks on the Freising-Weihenstephan campus:
- DNS: management of the Weihenstephan internet domains and name resolution
- DHCP: automatic assignment of IP addresses for most networks on campus
- NTP: consistent time synchronization for computers and servers
The DNS and DHCP servers are redundant: if one server fails, the second one takes over automatically. For new DNS entries or fixed IP addresses, please contact it-support@ls.tum.de.
Chairs and institutions can have virtual servers operated by us, e.g. for license servers, databases, web applications or research platforms such as OMERO. The virtual machines run on our own virtualization cluster with redundant storage; we also use the LRZ's managed server offerings.
We set up new Linux servers largely automatically and keep them up to date with security updates. We coordinate network connection and firewall rules with you. Please send requests to it-support@ls.tum.de.
We operate the CIP pools (IT rooms) of the TUM School of Life Sciences with around 180 workstations. The computers are managed centrally as TUM-PCs: operating system, updates and software are distributed automatically, and printers and settings are provided via central policies.
We adapt the software to the courses every semester. Lecturers state their software requirements in the room reservation no later than 4 weeks before the course starts. Equipment and software of each room are listed in the IT rooms overview.
IT security protects the availability, confidentiality and integrity of systems, data and services. We support the chairs and institutions of the TUM School of Life Sciences in operating their computers and IT services securely.
Reporting security incidents: IT security incidents and vulnerabilities are recorded centrally at TUM. Report them informally to it-sicherheit@tum.de or – anonymously if you wish – via the reporting platform. Examples include:
- loss of a device containing sensitive data
- intrusion into IT systems or compromised credentials
- malware spreading via TUM systems
- security-critical vulnerabilities in devices and systems in use
Reports are treated confidentially. More information: IT security (TUMDesk, German)
We manage virtual firewalls in the Munich Scientific Network (MWN) for chairs and institutions of the TUM School of Life Sciences. The firewalls run at the LRZ as a redundant pfSense pair on LRZ hardware; the networks to be protected are connected via dedicated VLANs and filtered there.
We set up the firewalls and maintain the firewall rules, for example access rules for servers and services. This way, not every chair needs its own expertise and staff to operate a firewall.
Contact us if you would like to protect your network with a firewall or change rules: it-support@ls.tum.de. More information: Virtual firewall (LRZ, German)
SentinelOne is TUM's endpoint protection solution. On TUM-PCs, the LRZ installs the SentinelOne client automatically – you don't need to do anything. For computers not centrally managed (Windows, macOS or Linux), installation instructions are available in the TUM wiki on SentinelOne (TUM login required).
If you suspect malware, contact the LSIT helpdesk or report the incident to it-sicherheit@tum.de.
We operate our own license servers for software with network licenses. The programs in the CIP rooms and on the chairs' workstations obtain their licenses automatically from the campus network.
- central SPSS license server
- FlexNet license servers, e.g. for Autodesk AutoCAD and Inventor in the CIP rooms
- network licenses for individual chairs, e.g. MAXQDA
The SPSS campus license itself is ordered from the LRZ (SPSS at the LRZ, German). Would you like us to host a network license for your chair? Contact us at it-support@ls.tum.de.
TUM provides students and staff with numerous programs free of charge or at a discount, including Microsoft products, MATLAB and antivirus software. How to obtain and use the centrally provided software is explained in the wiki “Central software offers of TUM” (TUM login required).
For work computers, your institution must be able to prove correct licensing. We are happy to help with questions about the right license.
Via StudiSoft, TUM staff and students can obtain software free of charge or at greatly reduced prices. You sign in with your TUM ID.
The LRZ offers TUM institutions, staff and students software licenses on academic terms, e.g. SPSS, Maple or ANSYS. TUM chairs and institutes are generally eligible.
Please note the LRZ license conditions: your institution must keep the proof of license (usually the invoice) so that licensing can be verified in an audit. Overview and ordering: Software and licenses (LRZ, German).
Koinon is TUM's web-based portal that chairs and institutions use to handle administrative processes digitally – without paper forms or PDFs sent by email. At the TUM School of Life Sciences, you can use it to request, among other things:
- permissions in TUMonline (for units without their own delegate)
- hardware via the web shops of TUM framework-contract partners
- activation as a TYPO3 editor
- HiWi time tracking
- membership in the OMERO working group
Go to the portal: koinon.tum.de. Instructions and further information are available on the Koinon portal page.
We operate and further develop the curricular analysis platform. This web application supports aptitude assessment and curricular analysis, for example for the Master’s program in Biology at the TUM School of Life Sciences.
Applicants enter the modules they have completed. These are sorted into categories and compared with the required credits. Examiners adjust the assignment and recognition in the admin area and generate evaluations and PDFs.

Appointment portal for selection committees
For the second phase of the application process, we also operate the appointment portal, which is used to organize the selection committees' appointments. You sign in with your TUM ID via the central TUM login.
The Center for Advanced Light Microscopy (CALM) of imaging@TUM at the TUM School of Life Sciences enables researchers to perform state-of-the-art microscopy and microspectrometry. Fluorescence-based techniques – such as live imaging with confocal microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, time-resolved fluorescence (fluorescence lifetime imaging, FRET-FLIM), fluorescence anisotropy (FA) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) – allow cellular processes to be studied in vivo at the highest resolution.
To reserve the microscopes, we operate the booking system CALM Booking (TUM login required). It is based on the open-source software LibreBooking. You request access via membership in the OMERO working group in the Koinon portal.
At TUM, work devices such as PCs, notebooks and monitors are purchased through the university's framework agreements – at discounted prices and with tested models. Partners include:
- Hansen & Gieraths (Dell desktops & workstations)
- Bechtle (Lenovo: notebooks & accessories)
- Cancom (Apple products)
Orders are placed via the framework partners' web shops (TUM WebShop); you request access in the Koinon portal. Private purchases via the framework agreements are not permitted. We are happy to help you choose suitable devices: it-support@ls.tum.de.
TUM has a framework agreement with Vodafone for work mobile contracts. We support the institutions of the TUM School of Life Sciences in managing their contracts via Vodafone Business, for example with:
- new contracts, phone numbers and SIM cards (with or without a device)
- contract and tariff changes as well as cancellations
- number porting and international data packages
Please send requests informally by email to it-support@ls.tum.de.
We help you set up central services and common programs at your workstation, for example:
- LRZ Sync+Share: sync files and share them with colleagues – available to all TUM staff and students
- Network drives (NAS) for chairs and working groups
- Outlook for email and calendar
- Adobe Acrobat Pro and other standard software
Simply contact the LSIT helpdesk.
TUM's websites run on the TYPO3 content management system, provided centrally by TUM's TYPO3 team. We support the chairs and institutions of the School in maintaining their websites – from new pages to questions about editing.
You request TYPO3 editor access in the Koinon portal. Manuals and information are available on the TYPO3 page in TUMDesk; TUM's central contact is typo3@tum.de.
