Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern - Student Housing in Freising

Finding accommodation in the Munich area is not easy. In Munich, Freising (and Rosenheim), the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern offers affordable rooms and apartments for students. The rental costs in Freising are around €300 per month, depending on the type of room. However, due to high demand, waiting times can range from one to four semesters, depending on the dormitory and location.

Dormitories in Freising-Weihenstephan

For international full-time students

Rooms in student dormitories are in high demand. Apply at the Studierendenwerk as soon as you receive your letter of admission.

For international exchange program students

Students participating in an exchange program cannot apply directly to the Studierendenwerk for a room. However, in response to the internationalization efforts of universities, the Studierendenwerkoffers a service package for international exchange program students. In Freising-Weihenstephan, the Campus Office has a limited number of service package rooms available, which are initially allocated to students of the TUMexchange program who have indicated in their application that they would like a service package. The remaining contingent will then be distributed to students of the Erasmus+ or SEMP programs (first-come-first-serve principle). Students who have been allocated a service package will receive confirmation from the Campus Office of the TUM School of Life Sciences approximately two months before the start of the exchange semester. It is important that applicants report back within the specified time frames in order to receive a room, otherwise they will be assigned elsewhere. In some years, the Studentenwerk itself assigns dorm rooms to applicants via a lottery process.

The service package includes:

  • A room in a dormitory of the Studentenwerk Freising
  • A welcome package with sleeping bag, pillow plus pillowcase and sheets
  • International tutors to help you with your orientation
  • An invitation to a guided tour of Munich
  • Extensive cultural program and the opportunity to participate in trips, excursions and workshops organized by the Cultural Office
  • Information/newsletters about interesting events with/for (international) students
  • Useful tips on student life in Munich and Freising
  • Contact to other international and German students

There are fixed rental periods for these rooms:

  • for the winter semester: October 1 - March 31
  • for the summer semester: April 1 - September 30

It is not possible to move in before the official rental date. In case of arrival before the beginning of the rental period, students have to organize another accommodation themselves.
